Vitamin C is one of the most talked-about ingredients in skincare — and one of the most misunderstood. "What's the best Vitamin C serum?" is a question we hear constantly. The honest answer is that there's no single best Vitamin C for everyone. The right one for you comes down to the form of Vitamin C, its strength and — most importantly — your skin type. Here's an honest, clinic-informed look at how to choose.

What Vitamin C does for your skin

Vitamin C is a well-studied antioxidant ingredient found in many topical skincare products. In cosmetic terms, it's valued for helping skin look brighter, more even-toned and more radiant. It's worth setting expectations: topical results are gradual and vary from person to person. Vitamin C is best thought of as a supportive everyday ingredient rather than a quick fix.

The truth about "25% L-ascorbic acid"

L-ascorbic acid (often shortened to LAA) is the pure, active form of Vitamin C and the most researched. You'll see products advertised at high concentrations like 25% — but with Vitamin C, more isn't always better:

Beyond roughly 20%, research suggests little additional benefit and a greater chance of irritation.
Pure L-ascorbic acid is famously unstable — it oxidizes when exposed to light and air. If your Vitamin C has turned deep yellow or brown, it's past its best.
High-strength formulas can sting or feel irritating on sensitive skin.

A high-strength option such as C25 Cream — a 25% Vitamin C cream — can suit resilient skin that wants a potent antioxidant step. But it isn't the right starting point for everyone, and a lower strength is often the smarter choice for newcomers or sensitive skin.

Pure Vitamin C vs. gentler derivatives

Pure (L-ascorbic acid): the most potent and most researched, but the least stable and the most likely to irritate. Best suited to resilient skin.
Derivatives (such as ethyl ascorbic acid, ascorbyl glucoside or sodium ascorbyl phosphate): gentler and more stable, with a lower chance of irritation. A good choice for sensitive or first-time users, with a more gradual effect.

How to choose by skin type

Sensitive or reactive skin: start with a lower-strength or derivative formula and patch-test first. If your skin flushes easily, prioritize gentle, soothing products.
Normal or combination skin: a versatile daily antioxidant serum like aox ferulic (Vitamin C paired with ferulic acid) or Tri Vita C30 works well.
Resilient, experienced skin wanting maximum strength: a 25% formula such as C25 Cream.
Also targeting dark spots and uneven tone: a brightening-focused option such as the age element brightening line, which pairs Vitamin C with niacinamide, folds extra brightening support into a single step.

Serum or cream — which is best?

It depends on your skin and your routine. Serums are lightweight, absorb quickly and layer easily under moisturizer, which suits oily or combination skin. Creams are richer and more hydrating and can double as a moisturizing step, which suits drier or more mature skin. The "best" format is simply the one you'll use consistently and that your skin tolerates well.

How to use (and store) Vitamin C

When: mornings are popular, as an antioxidant step under sunscreen. It pairs well with SPF.
How often: start two to three times a week and build up as your skin adjusts.
Storage: keep it away from light and air. Opaque, airless packaging helps. Replace it if the colour darkens.
Always finish your morning with a broad-spectrum SPF.

What to look for on the label

Concentration: 10–20% L-ascorbic acid is the sweet spot for most people; higher isn't necessarily better.
Supporting antioxidants: Vitamin C is often paired with Vitamin E and ferulic acid — a well-studied trio that helps keep the formula stable.
Packaging: opaque, airless or dark-glass bottles protect the formula from light and air.
Texture and finish: choose a format (serum, cream or ampoule) that fits comfortably into your routine.

When might you notice a difference?

Vitamin C is a gradual ingredient, not an overnight one. With consistent daily use, many people find their complexion looks brighter and more even over several weeks. Patience and consistency matter far more than chasing the highest percentage — and, as always, results vary from person to person.

The honest bottom line

There's no universal "best Vitamin C serum" in Canada — only the best one for your skin. Match the form and strength to your skin type, use it consistently, and protect with sunscreen, and you'll give Vitamin C the best chance to make a visible difference.

The order you apply your products in can matter as much as the products themselves. When skincare is layered in the right sequence, each step has a better chance to do its job — and your skin has a better chance to look its best. Here's a clear, practical guide to layering your morning and evening routines, including exactly where serums, creams and SPF fit in.

The golden rule: thinnest to thickest

If you remember one thing, make it this: apply your products from the lightest, most water-like textures to the richest, creamiest ones. Watery essences and serums go on first so they can absorb into freshly cleansed skin; heavier creams and oils go last so they don't block the lighter layers underneath. A simple way to frame it — mornings are about protecting your skin for the day ahead, and evenings are about cleansing and replenishing it overnight.

Your morning routine, step by step

Cleanser. Start with clean skin using a gentle cleanser — something like micellar biphasic — to lift away overnight residue without stripping the skin.
Toner or mist (optional). A hydrating mist such as hydratonic mist refreshes the skin and preps it for the next steps.
Antioxidant serum. Mornings are a popular time for a Vitamin C or antioxidant serum — like aox ferulic or Tri Vita C30 — valued for helping the complexion look brighter and more even.
Eye cream. A dedicated eye product, such as an age element eye contour cream, goes on next around the delicate eye area.
Moisturizer. Lock in hydration with a moisturizer such as hydra-vital light. If your skin feels dry, layer a hyaluronic-acid serum like Hyal Ceutic underneath.
SPF — the non-negotiable final step. Finish every morning with a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher). Daily sun protection is the single most impactful step for protecting how your skin looks over time, so don't skip it — even on cloudy days — and reapply through the day.

Your evening routine, step by step

Cleanse (double cleanse if needed). If you wore makeup or SPF, cleanse twice — an oil-based or micellar cleanser first, then a gentle second cleanse.
Treatment or active step. Evening is when most people use their "actives." Alternate them — use a retinol such as Activ Retinol on some nights and an exfoliating acid (like a glycolic toner or peel) on others, rather than both on the same night. Introduce any active slowly so your skin can adjust.
Hydrating serum. Replenish moisture with a hyaluronic-acid serum such as ha densimatrix or Hyal Ceutic.
Eye cream. Reapply your eye product.
Night cream or moisturizer. Seal everything in with a richer night moisturizer — your skin can handle heavier textures while you sleep. No SPF is needed at night.

How long to wait between layers

You don't need to wait long — roughly 30 to 60 seconds is enough for most products to absorb before the next layer. Give active ingredients (like Vitamin C or retinol) a little extra time. As a general rule, water-based products go on before oil-based ones.

Common layering mistakes to avoid

Using too many strong actives at once. Combining retinol, a strong acid and high-strength Vitamin C in one routine is a recipe for irritation. Space them out across the week.
Skipping sunscreen. Active ingredients can make skin more sensitive to the sun, which makes daily SPF even more important.
Layering richest-first. Heavy creams applied before lightweight serums can block the lighter products from absorbing.
Not patch-testing. Introduce one new active at a time and patch-test first to see how your skin responds.

A sample weekly schedule for actives

Actives like retinol and exfoliating acids work best when they're spaced out rather than piled on. Here's a simple evening framework you can adapt to your own skin:

Monday & Thursday: retinol night (such as Activ Retinol), followed by moisturizer.
Tuesday & Friday: exfoliating-acid night (a glycolic or lactic product), followed by moisturizer.
Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday: recovery nights — just cleanse, a hydrating serum and moisturizer, with no strong actives.

If your skin is new to actives, start with only one or two active nights a week and build up slowly. Sensitive skin may prefer using an active just once every third night.

Adjusting for your skin type

Oily or combination: lighter, gel-based moisturizers; you may tolerate actives a little more often.
Dry: add a hyaluronic-acid serum under a richer cream, and consider buffering retinol by applying moisturizer first.
Sensitive: fewer actives, more soothing and barrier-supporting steps, and always patch-test something new.

An Aptos thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure that uses fine, absorbable threads to gently support and reposition facial skin. But the procedure itself is only part of the story — how you care for your skin in the first couple of weeks plays an important role in your comfort and recovery. Here's what our certified team recommends to support your skin after a thread lift. These are general guidelines; always follow the specific instructions your practitioner gives you.

Why aftercare matters

After a thread lift, your skin needs a little time to settle around the threads. Treating it gently — and avoiding anything that could inflame or over-stimulate it — gives your skin the calmest possible environment to recover, and helps you feel comfortable while it does. Think of the next two weeks as the "settle and soothe" phase.

The first 48 hours: keep it simple and gentle

Cleanse gently with lukewarm water and your fingertips — no rubbing or pressure. A mild cleanser such as micellar biphasic is ideal.
Keep skin hydrated and comfortable with a simple, soothing routine.
Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated, and avoid sleeping face-down.
Don't touch, press or massage the treated area.
Skip makeup on the treated areas until your practitioner says it's fine.

What to avoid for about two weeks

This is the most important part of aftercare. For roughly two weeks, pause anything that can irritate or stress the skin:

No retinol or retinoids (for example, Activ Retinol).
No exfoliating acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic) and no scrubs or peels.
No high-strength Vitamin C or other strong actives.
No facials, microdermabrasion, saunas, hot yoga, intense exercise or facial massage.
Be gentle with strong facial expressions, and avoid non-urgent dental work where possible, as your practitioner advises.

Reintroduce your usual actives gradually, and only once your practitioner confirms it's okay.

The products we recommend

During recovery, the goal is simple: comfort, hydration and support for your skin barrier — using gentle products without active ingredients. These are the kinds of products our team reaches for:

Soothing recovery creams — fast skin repair and Panthenol Ceutic help calm and comfort the look of stressed skin.
For redness-prone skin — couperend cream supports the look of calm, comfortable skin.
A calming mask — anti-stress mask offers a gentle, comforting boost.
Lightweight hydration — Hyal Ceutic, ha densimatrix and hydratonic mist replenish moisture without heavy or active ingredients.
Regenerative support, from day two to three — Regen Ceutic and melan recovery, once any initial sensitivity has settled. (Regen Ceutic contains Vitamin C and antioxidants, so it's best introduced a couple of days in rather than immediately.)

To make it easy, we've grouped these gentle, post-treatment products together — browse our Post-Care collection in the shop.

Don't skip sun protection

Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) is essential during recovery and well beyond, to protect the look of your skin while it settles. Choose a gentle, fragrance-free formula and apply it once your practitioner has cleared you to do so.

A simple week-by-week routine

Every treatment plan is individual, so use this only as a general framework and defer to your practitioner:

Days 1–2: gentle cleansing, plus soothing and hydrating products only (such as fast skin repair or Panthenol Ceutic), and plenty of rest.
Days 3–7: continue gentle care; you can introduce a regenerative cream like Regen Ceutic if your skin feels comfortable, and keep up daily sun protection.
Week 2: maintain the calm, hydrating routine and keep avoiding strong actives, heat and facial massage.
After two weeks: reintroduce your usual actives (retinol, acids, stronger Vitamin C) gradually, once your practitioner gives the go-ahead.

What's normal during recovery?

Some mild tightness, or a feeling of the threads as your skin settles, can be part of the process and usually eases over the following days. Everyone's recovery is a little different — if you're ever unsure whether something is normal, it's always best to check with your practitioner rather than guess.

When to contact the clinic

If anything doesn't feel right — unusual discomfort, signs of infection, or any concern at all — reach out to us. We're here to support you throughout your recovery, not just on the day of your treatment.

A note on results

A thread lift is designed to give a subtle, natural-looking result, but it isn't permanent — the threads are absorbable, and results vary from person to person. Thoughtful aftercare supports your comfort and helps you get the most from your treatment. Individual results may vary.
